How to Keep Your Garage Cool This Summer

It’s getting hot. Whether you’re experiencing dry heat or have to deal with high amounts of humidity, you’re going to want to keep your house cool. You’ll also want to make sure you keep your garage cool and protected from the summer heat.

Whether you like to work in your garage, use it for storage, or just park your car in there, it’s best to keep that heat and humidity out of your garage. Any tools or appliances can be susceptible to heat damage, and too much humidity can cause rust.

If you’re wanting to keep your garage cool this summer, we at The Overhead Door Company® have some tips to help prevent any overheating and humidity damage in your garage.

Insulate Your Garage Door

Insulating your residential garage door seems like the solution to every garage door problem. If it’s too cold, too hot, too rainy, or too much of any type of weather, you’re told to insulate your garage door. However, there’s a reason why insulating your garage door is so beneficial.

Garage door insulation helps create another barrier between your garage and the weather outside. In the summer, it helps prevent hot air from seeping into your garage when the door is closed, and keeps the nice air conditioning from seeping out of your garage. This helps your garage to maintain a more consistent temperature in the summer.

Adding insulation may not sound like the most exciting thing to do on a hot summer day. Luckily, we at The Overhead Door Company® don’t mind as much. Let us come install your garage door insulation and help keep that hot summer air out of your garage.

Let Your Garage Air Out

While it may seem counterintuitive, opening the garage door can actually help your garage cool down a bit. Allowing the garage to air out and let any trapped heat escape can help the garage cool off. On days where it’s not as hot outside, open up the garage door for a few hours.

While opening your garage door this summer, also make sure it’s working properly. Having the door open sometimes can help with ventilation, but you don’t want it to get stuck in the open position, especially when it’s 100 degrees outside. So, make sure to pay attention to how your garage door is operating and call The Overhead Door Company® if you notice anything wrong.

Increase the Air Flow in Your Garage

If you’re trying to keep your garage cool this summer, keeping the air circulating can help. Installing ceiling fans, an air conditioning system, or even just portable fans in your garage can help keep the air moving and prevent it from getting too hot.

Keep Hot Cars Out of the Garage

Now, you may not like this one, but parking your car outside can help keep heat out of your garage. When a car runs, it heats up, and that heat then gets trapped in the garage when you park. So, when trying to keep your garage cool this summer, the best practice is to park your car outside this summer.

Yes, we know parking your car outside in the summer heat doesn’t sound very appealing. So, if you’re planning on parking your car in the garage regardless of what we at The Overhead Door Company® say, then at least let your call cool off before storing it in the garage. Either keep the door open for a while after parking your garage to allow the heat to leave the garage, or leave your car outside until it cools off before moving it into the garage.
